The British Council in Nigeria and the First City Monument Bank Plc (FCMB) are today on the second of a two-day interfaith seminar on climate change in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Climate change poses a threat to agriculture, livelihoods, social cohesion, etc. in the region. The forum is a follow up to a research done by the council in collaboration with the BBC World Service Trust on perceptions of climate change in Sub-Saharan Africa. One significant finding relates to the understanding of issues and language of climate change, which are very low. The second is that many people in Nigeria and several other countries across the region link climate change to faith, which the researchers term ‘God Frame’.

Based on the perception, the council organized a round table in Kano, chaired by the British High Commissioner, Mr. Bob Dewar, and held discussions with Islamic and Christian scholars and local leaders and politicians.

“Many people in Nigeria believe that Climate Change is closely linked to faith and look to faith leaders to understand the issues and for guidance”, Ben Fisher, director of programmes for the council, and Njoku Remigius, public relations officer for FCMB, said.

“We believe that tackling the consequences of Climate Change can in the words of the Christian Muslim Youth Forum, ‘bridge variances in faith, ideals and backgrounds and draw upon our collective moral and religious conscience to take responsibility for the condition of our planet and its people.’”
