The World Bank said yesterday that it is willing to work to see that Nigeria’s Commercial Agriculture Development Project (CADP) is successful. Quality work coupled with a quick disbursement of funds to beneficiaries will guarantee better results, the bank added.
Country director of the bank, Mr. Onno Ruhl, said he not only expected commercial agriculture to ensure food security for Nigeria. It should reverse current food importation bill into food export bill. The European Union said yesterday it will support the development aspects of the Economic Partnership Agreement in future negotiations with West Africa. Area surrounding Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical Company is to undergo remediation. Environment Minister John Odey said yesterday that environment hosting the company has been impacted negatively by its operation, and needs to be restored.
The minister assured that the right kind of technology and approach will be used for the clean-up and remediation. Odey spoke at the meeting of the sub-committee on environmental clean-up and remediation of the Niger Delta region which took place in Abuja. According to him, government had already completed remediation of oil sites which had been similarly impacted at Ibaje, Delta State. Continue Reading »

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources said today it is postponing the sixth session of the national cocoa day. A new date was yet to be fixed for the event which was to hold April 15-17 at Ilorin, Kwara.
A statement from head of communication, Mr. Olu Lipide, cited the ministry’s permanent secretary, Mr. Salihu Aliyu Gusau, saying the postponement will affect the hosting of this year’s national cocoa day. The theme is about using quality cocoa to effect national economic transformation.

From 22-26 March 2010 the ECOWAS Commission, in partnership with the Government of the Republic of Liberia, the African Union and the United Nations, held the International Conference: “Two Decades of Peace Processes in West Africa: Achievements, Failures, Lessons” at the SKD Stadium in Monrovia.
The Conference was hosted by H.E. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of the Republic of Liberia. It was attended by three former West African Heads of State; the leadership and senior officials of the ECOWAS and AU Commissions, and the UN; Members of the ECOWAS Council of the Wise; Former ECOMOG and ECOMIL Commanders; Government officials from ECOWAS Member States; Practitioners and Researchers; and representatives of Civil Society and the Media. The British Council is today a seminar on policy dialogue on waste management at Transcorp Hilton in Abuja.
